Cheramy Hassen Honored as an Angel in Adoption!

27 Jul

Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and Representative Adam Smith nominated and selected Cheramy Hassen as a 2012 Angels in Adoption awardee for her outstanding advocacy of adoption and foster care issues. The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI), which orchestrates the Angels in Adoption program, will honor Cheramy, along with more than 150 Angels, at an awards ceremony and gala event in Washington, DC, September 12, 2012.

Cheramy Hassen has been an Adoption Counselor for 29 years, 14 of which have been spent at Children’s Home Society of Washington working for adoptive parents throughout the state. She “fell in love with adoption” when she brought her first child, Cole (who is 32 now) into her home through adoption. She began her career working with birth parents to place children, but ultimately made the shift to working with adoptive parents, an equally rewarding but “more joyful” side of adoption.

Cheramy has four children, three of whom were adopted. Being an adoptive mom herself has benefited her in her role at CHSW. She understands the developmental needs of adoptive kids and have developed a great deal of compassion, respect, and empathy for how difficult it is to place your child for adoption. She has dedicated her life to adoptees and adoptive parents, helping hundreds of children find their forever families, and establish permanent, secure, and loving relationships. She is patient with families, and mindful of how daunting the adoption process can be. She also works as a national trainer, providing adoption information to health care providers as an alternative for unplanned or crisis pregnancies.

Cheramy eloquently states, “I believe in adoption. It touches my life and heart in a way that nothing else does. I am part of the miracle of bringing a child home to their new family. What could be better than that?”

Several “National Angels” will also be recognized at the 2012 ceremony and gala for their dedication and commitment nationally and internationally to child welfare on a grand scale. Former National Angels include First Lady Laura Bush, Patti LaBelle, Jane Seymour, Muhammad Ali, the late Dave Thomas, Steven Curtis Chapman, Bruce Willis, Alonzo Mourning, Rhea Perlman, and Kristin Chenoweth.
